Written from the perspective of Ryan Lloyd, Head of Marketing at Sol Distribution
It was not only golf day, but also rebrand day, and the sun came out and shone bright yellow, just like our new logo.
It was another hot one, and like Graeme mentioned at the start of his introductory speech welcoming everyone to the day, every year we have a miracle. The day before has always been terrible for weather, and then for golf day itself, the sun comes out. This year was no different.
The first team teed off at 10 o’clock and the day was underway. Drink and snack tents were set up at hole ten (arguably the best hole of the course), where one of our famous challenges awaited our players – who can hit the longest drive? A prize was lined up for the winner, and that person was Josh Naylor from CertaUPS.
As well as the longest drive challenge, we also had other challenges. Here are the challenges and their winners:
- Nearest the Pin on the 4th hole – Luke Nutbrown, Niemans
- Nearest the Pin in 2 on the 7th hole – Andrew Spencer, Sol Distribution
- Nearest the Pin on the 12th hole – Mark Drake, Insight
- Nearest the Pin in 2 on the 18th hole – Phil Kershaw, World Options
Later in the day, we had the ‘clinic’. The clinic is an important part of the day, as we give the opportunity to those not hugely familiar with golf to give it a try, even if only for fun.
The clinic had its own set of winners, with first place going to Asad Munir from Weblib in the putting challenge, followed by Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise’s Nick Milnes and Weblib’s Jason Goody. Weblib came to win and win they did. Shame my years of crazy golf proved useless here, but I’ll try again next year.
Following a great day of play, we concluded with the presentation and the raffle. It was then we learnt the overall individual winner, as well as overall winning team and the total amount raised for this year’s charity, The Movement Centre.
The winners were as follows:
1st place – Rob Wood, Insight (40 points)
2nd place – Felix Fox, Softcat (38 points)
3rd place – Mark Drake, Insight (36 points on count back)
4th place – Andrew Webb, XM Cyber (36 points on countback)
5th place – David Hobbs, Total Computers (36 points on countback)
Special mention – Dave Kerner, who also had 38 points but his card got missed.
Winning team – Grant Dall (Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise), Rob Wood (Insight), Felix Fox (Softcat), Les Howell (Amillan).
A huge thanks goes to our sponsors for providing the prizes, namely Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise our platinum sponsor, as well as Lantronix and CertaUPS being our gold sponsors, with mention also to Weblib and RAD for being our silver and bronze sponsors respectively. Without our sponsors and their generosity in providing the prizes, the day just wouldn’t have that same level of excitement.
All that excitement, and all that enjoyment, and we also raised £2,169.02 for charity.
If you missed it this year, you won’t want to miss it next year. It really is a highlight in the Sol Distribution calendar.
